Equinor inaugurated the world's largest floating offshore wind farm.
\nThe opening ceremony for the Hywind Tampen offshore wind farm was attended by Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re on the Gullfaks C platform.<\/p>\n
Gullfaks and Snorre are the world's first oil and gas fields to be powered by offshore wind energy, reducing CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n
\u201cHywind Tampen is expected to reduce CO2 emissions with 200,000 tonnes per annum from key oil and gas producers in the North Sea. This is a bold investment in a pioneering project by the Gullfaks and Snorre and Enova partnerships. The project has given us and the supplier valuable industry experience that will be important as we work together to further develop offshore wind in Norway and globally, expanding it for the future. The wind farm consists of 11 wind turbines based on the floating Hywind concept developed by Equinor. Hywind Tampen has a system capacity of 88 MW and is expected to cover around 35 percent of the annual electricity requirement on the five platforms Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C. The wind farm is managed from Equinor's office location in Bergen.<\/p>\n

In five years, the project has gone from the drawing board to completion. Sixty percent of the project's contract value has been awarded to Norwegian suppliers. This has contributed to new activities, green jobs, local spin-offs and technology development for future floating offshore wind projects in a growing industry.<\/p>\n
Enova and the Norwegian Business Sector NoX fund have supported the project with NOK 2.3 billion and NOK 566 million respectively to stimulate technological development within offshore wind energy and emissions reduction.<\/p>\n
The planned investment for the project now amounts to approximately NOK 7.4 billion. When the development and operation plan was submitted, the development cost was estimated at approximately NOK 5 billion. The increase is due to a combination of COVID-related costs, delivery delays, quality problems in some deliveries and knock-on effects. In addition, higher market prices, exchange rate effects and compensation to suppliers for COVID-19 effects have contributed. At the same time, the expected CO2 tax and gas price have increased, which has a positive effect on project economics.<\/p>\n
