A giant step was taken yesterday at the federal level, which consisted in the decriminalization of abortion, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation determined that it is unconstitutional to penalize the practice of termination of pregnancy to a pregnant woman, because it violates human rights, this decision obligates federal public health institutions, such as the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE) or Pemex, to offer the service free of charge. In addition, it involves amending the Federal Penal Code to eliminate the crime of abortion, which is defined in Article 329 as \u201cthe death of the product of conception at any time during pregnancy\u201d, and which contemplates a penalty of one to three years for those who \u201ccause a woman to have an abortion\u201d, even with her consent. It also included disqualifications of two to five years for doctors who perform abortions.
\nAlthough all this had been a very relevant issue, the analysis is always influenced by points of view that emanate from moral, religious and scientific interpretations, thus dividing society into what is known today as \u201cliberals and conservatives\u201d, since both groups base their convictions on what is convenient for their conscience, and it seems that today this news is a reason for celebration for some and injustice for others, The truth is that from a realistic, guarantor and legal point of view, today a Mexican woman was granted the right to decide about her body, without entering into questions of morality, and in Mexico City this was possible since April 2007, so that was an important precedent to grant without distinction to all women in the country access to a legal and safe abortion, since this is also based on the rights to life and health that we have as Mexicans.
\nSo yesterday many women and doctors who had participated in the interruption of pregnancy and who had been deprived of their freedom, recovered it, however, we are not yet talking about a judicial decriminalization against the Federal Penal Code, but if the federal congress is forced to repeal it, fair or unfair, yesterday was a historic day for Mexican women.<\/p>\n
