President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador presented 20 constitutional reform initiatives to be sent to the Chamber of Deputies so that during the remainder of the current legislature they may be analyzed, discussed and, if necessary, approved.<\/p>\n
The proposals range from recognition of indigenous communities to reforms in the pension system, justice, environment and education:<\/p>\n
1. Recognition of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples.<\/p>\n
2. Guarantee the pension for senior citizens and increase it every year, as well as care for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n
3. Grant scholarships to low-income students at all school levels.<\/p>\n
4. Guarantee free and comprehensive medical care to the population.<\/p>\n
5. Guarantee housing for workers.<\/p>\n
6. Prohibit the mistreatment of animals.<\/p>\n
7. Prohibition of fracking and not granting concessions for open-pit mining.<\/p>\n
8. Respect water-scarce areas and only grant concessions for domestic use.<\/p>\n
9. Ban trade in vapes and chemical drugs such as fentanyl.<\/p>\n
10. Increase the minimum wage above annual inflation.<\/p>\n
11. That the minimum wage for teachers, police, marines, nurses, doctors, among other government workers, should not be less than that of workers enrolled in the social security system.<\/p>\n
12. Reverse the pension reforms approved in 1997 and 2007 by Presidents Ernesto Zedillo and Felipe Calder\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
13. Guarantee the right to education and work.<\/p>\n
14. Provide insurance to farmers who cultivate their land and maintain direct support programs for production.<\/p>\n
15. Use 18,000 kilometers of railroad tracks for passenger trains and return the Federal Electricity Commission to its status as a strategic public company.<\/p>\n
16. Reduction of electoral expenses, decrease to 64 senators and 300 deputies, and reduce to 30% of participation so that the popular consultations are binding.<\/p>\n
17. Election of judges, magistrates and ministers by popular vote.<\/p>\n
18. Integrate the National Guard into the National Defense Secretariat to avoid corruption.<\/p>\n
19. Establish in the Constitution that no public servant may earn more than the President of the Republic.<\/p>\n
20. Eliminate autonomous agencies.<\/p>\n
