What is the new scam in CDMX about?
The Cyber Police Unit of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC-CDMX) detected the scam in networks. The modus operandi begins when the scammers detect people who want a relationship, either with a “sugar daddy” or “sugar mommy”.
Taking advantage of victims“ vulnerability, fraudsters ”use false identities, manipulated photos and fictitious profiles".”
“When the connection is established, the crooks may ask for money in advance under false pretenses or deceive about their financial capacity,” the SSC said.
The Cybernetic Police of the CDMX, through the SSC, indicated that to avoid falling into this type of scams it is recommended:
- Before committing to someone in this type of relationship, thoroughly research their identity and background.
- Do not share details such as bank account numbers or credit card information.
- Being wary of overly generous promises
- Remain vigilant for any warning signs, such as requests for advance money, discrepancies in information provided or unusual behavior during communication
- Avoid committing yourself to a financial relationship without a clear understanding of who the person is
- Avoid meetings in private or unfamiliar places during the first few dates.
What is a “sugar”?
The SSC-CDMX indicated that “sugars” are financially established individuals who provide financial support to younger couples.
