Cofepris issued a double alert to the population against the use of the deceptive product Reductil. The agency assured that, in addition to containing the harmful substance sibutramine, it is manufactured and marketed illegally in our country.
This product that supposedly helps to lose weight is openly offered through social networks, in packaging that also fails to comply with the legislation. They only inform about the active ingredient, expiration date and batch, but not about the laboratory or where and how it was manufactured.
Likewise, through a press release, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) informed on Wednesday that the company Novo Nordisk México, S.A. de C.V. has disassociated itself from its production. After some versions of this product were said to bear its seal.
What harm does sibutrimine do, according to Cofepris?
Cofepris also pointed out that the use of sibutramine has been prohibited since 2010 in Mexico in weight loss products. Likewise, in Europe by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
This is due to the fact that some health problems associated with its use have been identified, among which the following stand out:
- Significant increase in blood pressure
- Significant increase in heart rate
- Negative interaction with other drugs
Cofepris also stressed that the increase in blood pressure and heart rate may increase the risk of patients with a history of heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure or stroke.
However, he called on those who are interested in losing weight to see medical specialists in order to receive specialized treatment after a diagnosis based on clinical studies.
What about Reductil and sibutramine?
In addition to the harmful effects identified with the use of sibutramine, for which several health agencies have banned it, it should be noted that this drug, in its Reductil presentation, is promoted and marketed through social networks.
On platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, it is common to find videos in which, with a catchy song and photographs of boxes filled with packaging of this product, show supposed before and after images of “clients” who have lost weight significantly. Then they give a WhatsApp number to contact in order to purchase it.
Some videos even claim that the purchase of this product is safe because the boxes come sealed and with the lot number (the UZINI52 reported to Cofepris) and the expiration date.
They also say that it is legal because it comes in a sterilized blister pack, which they claim only pharmaceutical laboratories have. They also show documents in which the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and the Cofepris supposedly approve its commercialization.
