Chlorine gas: what is it and what are its health effects?

Chlorine gas (Cl2) is a compound formed by two chlorine atoms, i.e. a dichlorine. Under normal conditions of pressure and temperature, it presents a yellow-greenish gas, it is 2.5 times heavier than air, so it is highly toxic. It has a strong and highly corrosive odor.

This gas is used for the reaction that gives rise to sodium hypochlorite., an oxidizing chemical compound used for surface disinfection (household chlorine bleach).

In addition, chlorine gas is a corrosive substance used to make water drinkable. May cause damage to eyes, skin and respiratory tract.

On the other hand, inhalation of the gas may cause tearing, eye irritation, erosion of the teeth and damage to the respiratory tract, and may even cause pulmonary edema.
