Today, February 18, 2022, the Economist published the following:
The opposition in the Chamber of Deputies raised its force to reverse one of the major projects of the President of Mexico and his greatest desire, “the reform of the electricity sector”.
Yesterday, Sunday, the deputies gathered in San Lazaro to approve the electricity reform, however, the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies rejected it, with 275 votes in favor and 223 against and zero votes obtained. The electric reform needed the approval of two thirds of the Chamber, at least Morena needed at least 53 votes from the opposition.
The electricity reform did not prosper because it was insufficient, the necessary consensus was not sought, and it was not the time to discuss the initiative, in addition to the fact that the political environment for a serious debate was not generated.
Even before concluding the discussion of the electricity reform yesterday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that “whatever happens, we are already shielded against betrayal”, in reference to his initiative on lithium that he sent to San Lazaro yesterday.
