Mexico's Chamber of Deputies has overwhelmingly approved a significant extension of paternity leave from 5 to 20 working days. This change, applicable to both public and private sector workers, was supported with 409 votes in favor, 1 against and 2 abstentions, during Tuesday's session.
According to the amendments to the law, these paternity leaves will be granted with pay and will apply in cases of both birth and adoption.
The resolution, which is part of a draft decree that amends several provisions of the Federal Labor Law and the Federal Law of Workers in the Service of the State, which regulates section B) of article 123 of the Constitution, establishes that these leaves will begin to be counted as of the arrival of the child at home. In addition, an extended period of up to 30 days has been considered in cases of complications for the mother or child.
