The IEA forecasts total global installed renewable energy capacity to reach 7.3 GW in 2028 “under current policies and market conditions.” In an “accelerated scenario,” also through 2028, “faster policy implementation drives renewable energy capacity growth 21 percentage points higher than in the main forecast.”.
“It's still not enough to reach the Cop 28 target of tripling renewables, but we are getting closer, and governments have the tools they need to close the gap,” said IEA executive director Fatih Birol. More than 120 countries agreed in December at the UN's Cop 28 climate summit to triple renewables capacity to 11TW by 2030. The IEA uses the 2022 installed renewable energy capacity of 3.65TW as the baseline year. But achieving the COP 28 commitment “will depend” on financing and deployment of renewables in emerging and developing economies, “many of which are lagging behind in the new energy economy,” Birol warned.

This situation forces Mexico to carry out a due analysis based on the tools and obstacles that currently accompany it on its path to the energy transition, and to delimit what it expects for future years, because although it is assertive for the president to maintain in his speech the interest of leading Mexico to such transition, for many experts it is still not clear how he will achieve this, since today, everything continues to point towards the permanence and promotion of fossil fuels.
