Following the departure of Néstor Martínez on December 31, 2023, the CNH does not have a quorum to meet.
The National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) faces a significant challenge as of January 1, 2024, as it has lost the minimum legal quorum necessary to hold sessions of its governing body. For according to the applicable regulations, at least four commissioners are required.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the Senate of the Republic failed to appoint three new commissioners during the year 2023. Given this lack of action, the responsibility now falls on the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who will appoint the three remaining vacancies from among the 12 profiles he sent to the upper chamber in short lists last year. Last November, new shortlists were sent to the Energy Commission for their analysis, which endorsed the suitability opinions of the candidates proposed by the President, however, none of the candidates obtained sufficient votes in the plenary.
