Have you ever been called by phone from an unknown number and when you answered they hung up on you? Are you curious to know who dialed you? Be careful, because you could fall into a scam.
Through the Consumer Magazine, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) explains to the Mexican population about Wangiri, the new form of scam through telephone calls.
What is Wangiri?
Wangiri is a telephone scam in which criminals call a telephone number and hang up after a few seconds. The objective of this scam is for the victim to return the call, which will result in a high cost to the victim.
Scammers often use international or pay phone numbers to make these calls, so the victim may not realize that he or she is calling a pay number. When the victim returns the call, he or she is charged a high rate per minute or second.
According to Profeco, fraudsters make these scams for the following reasons:
- Data theft
- Deception so that the defrauded party makes a payment
- Extortion by means of emotional manipulation by indicating a family member in danger
