What is the montachoques?
The "montachoques", criminals who simulate automobile accidents to extort money from unsuspecting drivers, have become an alarming situation in Mexico City and other areas of the Mexican Republic.
How do they carry out this new form of extortion?
Mounties operate in an ingenious and coordinated manner to achieve their extortionist goals. One of their most common tactics is to stop abruptly in front of a driver, forcing a rear-end collision. Taking advantage of the shock and confusion of the accident, the extortionists will accuse the victim of being responsible for the crash and demand financial compensation to avoid involving the traffic authorities.
Example based on a real event
- A camera installed in the victims' car recorded the events on the night of March 3 in the central lanes of Circuito Interior in Mexico City.
- On the driver's side, a pickup truck suddenly closes and, almost immediately, on the passenger's side, a red car performs the same maneuver.
- A rear shot reveals more details, where you can see the forklifts coordinating as they drive behind their target.
- The red car appears in the low-speed lane, already with a badly damaged bodywork on the driver's side. In the high-speed lane is a black pickup truck. Both vehicles merge and almost synchronously accelerate and close abruptly.
Result of this new form of extortion
They provoke accidents, intimidate drivers to pay them for damages in cash.
Prevention Treatment.
They promote campaigns to encourage victims to report these crimes through the General Directorate for Attention to Kidnapping and Extortion Cases, a specialized investigation and intelligence unit.
