The use of applications is very normalized nowadays, from scanning QR codes, video and photo editors, to the more serious and useful banking apps, but as always, everything carries a risk and malicious developers could steal your financial information.
What are the apps that can steal your banking data?
This malware is specifically designed to steal login credentials to electronic banking platforms.
According to the cybersecurity firm, the following apps from the Play Store have been identified as carrying the virus:
- PDF Reader & File Manager: This is a mobile application that allows users to view and manage PDF files on their devices. In addition to reading PDFs, some versions may include additional features such as file organization, highlighting and document annotation.
- QR Reader & File Manager: It is an application designed to allow users to scan QR codes with the cell phone camera. It also offers additional features, such as the ability to manage and organize files on the device such as documents, images, videos, among others.
How does the Anatsa Trojan operate?
According to Zscaler researchers, the banking malware Anatsa or Teabot were promoted as file management services, editors and translators, among others, so as not to arouse suspicion when downloading and installing them.
Once installed, they downloaded the malicious code with which they connected to a command and control server to run Anatsa in order to search the infected device for a number of banking applications on its target list.
This was intended to generate a fake login page for those banking apps that matched the ones on the victim's list. The victim, thinking he was using a legitimate service, typed in his login credentials, which were then in the hands of the cybercriminals.
